Iquitos, Peru

hi all from the hot Iquitos !!

I stayed in Loja until the kids started school and got ill one day with food poisoning or something, but all great !! by the time I left kids new my name and felt sad to leave, but one has to what one has to do !!
Anyway, after a very long trip (35hrs) I got to Iquitos and had crocodile for diner !! not bad but a wee chewy !! Iquitos is a friendly, hot and slightly manic jungle metropolis that holds the title of the largest city in the world without road links. Everything is 'imported' by boat or by air. Walked around and visited the market of Belen and its shanty town guided by a chap I met called Francisco who was selling fruit. The thing is that he took me around and showed me the wooden and dirty housed built on stilts (coz in rainy season it gets completely flooded and people move around in boats). Very interesting and eyeopening !!
The following day I took a trip to the jungle and after breakfast I took a dip in the legendary Amazonas !! Awesome !! Brown water but no dangerous animals in that part of the river !! or at least I got unscathed !! Then I met Paul and Jane and went to our lodge in an arm of the Amazonas. Pretty cool and relaxing, no TV, no showers, no electricity !! and lots of birds and other animals !!
Now back in Iquitos, but in the jungle I swam several times !! Saw dolphins, tarantulas, dangerous trees (populated with fire ants), monkeys, lizards, capibaras (the bigest rodent in the world), sloths (pretty weird), eagles, parrots and even a tapir (related to the cow) !! We also fished piranhas in the same place where we swim !!! that was scary !! and played with monkeys !! An unforgetable experience !! Wanted to stay ... but need to keet on rolling and tomorrow off to Cuzco !!

hola a todos desde Iquitos !!

me quede en Loja hasta que los chavales empezaron la escuela. Me puse malo con dolor de tripa unos dias pero todo fenomenal !! para cuando me fui los niños ya se sabian mi nombre, jugaban conmigo y me daba un poco de palo irme, pero uno tiene que hacer lo que uno tiene que hacer !!
Bueno, despues de una jornada maratoniana (35 horas) llegue a Iquitos y me comi cola de cocodrilo para cenar !! esta bastante bueno pero hay que masticar bastante !! Iquitos es una metropolis en medio de la jungla amazonica, amigable y un poco loca que tiene el record de ser la ciudad mas grande del mundo que no esta unida con ningun sitio por carretera, o sea que todo tiene que ser 'importado' por barco o aire !! Pasee por la ciudad y visite el mercado de Belen. Alli conoci a un tipo que vendia fruta, Francisco, y me enseño donde vivian, en unas chabolas al lado del mercado. Son casas flotantes pq en temporada de lluvias el barrio se inunda y todo el mundo se maneja en barcas. Es un sitio bien pobre, pero la gente es muy maja. Fue una experiencia altamente interesante !!
Al dia siguiente tome un viaje con Clever a la selva, y despues de desayunar me bañe en el maravilloso y famoso Amazonas !! Increible !! El agua es marron de todos los sedimentos que arrastra, pero uno se puede bañar tranquilamente que no hay animales peligrosos por alli. Bueno, por lo menos a mi no me pico ninguno ... Despues conoci a Paul y Jane y nos fuimos todos a nuestro alojamiento en un brazo escondido del Amazonas. Muy tranquilo y relajante, sin electricidad ni agua corriente !! pero mogollon de animales y plantas !! magico !!
Ahora estoy de vuelta en Iquitos, pero en la jungla me bañe muchas veces en aguas fresquisimas !! Vimos delfines, tarantulas, arboles con hormigas rojas (que si te pican sufres mogollon y te puedes morir), monos, caimanes, capibaras (el roedor mas grande del mundo, un metro y medio), osos perezosos (superpeculiares), aguilas, loros y un precioso tapir (pariente de la vaca) !! Tambien pescamos pirañas en el mismo sitio donde nos bañamos !! eso si que es deporte de riesgo !! y jugamos con monos !! En definitiva, una experiencia muy recomendable y que nunca olvidare !! Me queria quedar mas ... pero mañana tengo un vuelo para Cuzco !!

todo fenomenal por aqui, con unas cuantas picaduras de mosquitos, pero esto es alucinante !!
