Cuzco, Peru

Cuzco is a beautiful city (3300m) that once was the foremost city of the Inca empire, and it's the continent's oldest continuosly inhabited city. Pizarro killed the inca Atawallpa in 1533 and conquered the city. There is a funny mix of inca and christian culture all around town !! I walked around chilling out the first day. I also tried to change the routing of my ticket but it is proving exceptionally difficult !! Anyway, that day I also visited 'Qorikancha' (golden courtyard), the most important temple in the inca empire. The site was also an observatory, and there are dozens or beautiful inca walls dotted around town.

The following day I visited the amazing Machu Picchu (2400m) !!

Despite the great tourist influx, the site manages to retain its air of grandeur and mistery, and is a must if you come around here in Peru !! The inca pre-eminence only lasted 100 years and it reached from Ecuador to Chile. An american historian looking for some lost cities bumped into it in 1911. There was no gold coz the incas had taken it all with them when they fled from the spaniards. When the conquistadores arrived, the incas left Machu Picchu and all of the other cities and resisted in the mountains of Vilcabamba for 37 years. It all ended when the last leader inca was killed, and all the other remaining incas fled to the jungle. Machu Picchu was built in about 40 years, 500 people were living in it (some selected elite). The mountains have the shape of a condor flying (by the way, the condor does seldom fly, he just glides thanks the currents of air), and that's the major significance, that the site was built in a special place, with magic meaning !! The legend says that the incas that fled after the spaniards, left for 'the city of gold' (Tarapipi), 60 days walking through the jungle from Machu Picchu, that no white man can enter that place (he wouldd be killed), and they are awaiting for the return of the inca culture !! Amazing !!

all good, catched a night bus and crossed into Bolivia !!

Cuzco es una bonita ciudad que una vez fue la ciudad mas importante del imperio Inca, y es la ciudad mas antigua de America que ha estado continuamente habitada. Pizarro y su ejercito mataron al inca Atawallpa en 1533 y conquirieron la ciudad para los españoles. Hay por toda la ciudad una extraña y curiosa mezcla de cultura inca y cristiana. El primer dia camine por la ciudad tranquilamente, respirando su historia. Tambien trate de cambiar la rura de mi billete de avion pero es mas complicado de lo que podria parecer. Vaya tela... Bueno, ese dia tambien visite 'Qorikancha' (el patio de oro), el templo mas importante del imperio Inca, que tambien servia las veces de observatorio. Hay docenas de maravillosas paredes incas esparcidas por toda la ciudad que uno puede tocar y sentir la historia.

Al dia siguiente subi al magico y maravilloso Machu Picchu !!

A pesar de la gran cantidad de turistas (la mayoria de ellos torpones), Machu Picchu aun mantiene ese aire de grandeza y misterio, y no hay que saltarselo si se viene por aqui en Peru !! El apogeo de los incas a penas duro 100 años y su territorio se extendia desde Ecuador hasta Chile. Un historiador americano descubrio Machu Picchu en 1911 cuando buscaba ciudades perdidas de los incas. No habia nada de oro porque los incas se lo habian llevado cuando huyeron de los españoles. Cuando los conquistadores llegaron a destruir su imperio, los incas abandonaron Machu Picchu y el resto de las ciudades incas y se refugiaron en las montañas de Vilcabamba durante 37 años. La cosa acabo cuando mataron al ultimo lider inca, y todos los demas incas se fueron a la selva. Machu Picchu fue construido en 40 años, y solo unas 500 personas (una elite) vivian alli. Las montañas de alrededor tienen la forma de un condor volando (que por cierto, el condor casi nunca vuela, planea usando las corrientes de aire de los cañones), y esto es lo magico, que el sitio no fue escogido al azar, sino que lo construyeron alli por alguna razon !! La leyenda dice que los incas se refugiaron a la selva y aun viven alli en la 'ciudad de oro' (Tarapipi), donde ningun hombre blanco ha llegado todavia, a 60 dias de camino desde Machu Picchu a traves de la jungla y donde esperan pacientemente al resurgir del inca !! alucinante !!

todo bien, cogi un bus nocturno infernal y cruce hacia Bolivia !!
