Safari (1), South Africa & Namibia

hi, this has been my amazing Safari so far:

Cape Town: got in from Durban the night before and stayed at my usual boutique hotel. There I met some people at the bar and we went out. Very cool and tribal nightclub !! It was a real meatmarket !! The following day I met Jon, my room mate (and tent mate for the rest of the trip) and went for a walk. There I bought my sleeping bag (what a great idea !!). The following day at breakfast I met the rest of the crew, and I am the second youngest !! all couples and pensioners, but that's ok coz we are in Africa !!

Lambert's bay: first day camping, and it was so cold that couldn't sleep !! went for a run in the afternoon and chatted to people. The group is nice and friendly and it's alll good.

Gariep River: also known as Orange River, it's South Africa's largest river and rises in the Drakensberg mountains of Lesotho. Nice bbq and some beers in the campfire. Bought myself a blanket and much better now !!

Fish River Canyion: crossed the border into Namibia and we headed to that impressive canyon. First stopped by hot water spring for a quick dip. The canyon is 160km in length, up to 27km in width and reaching depths of 550m. Very nice group. Everybody is friendly and we gather under the stars around some beers by the fire. We all hel to put up the tents and to wash the dishes. And Africa is such a nice and pretty place !!

Sossusvlei: driving through Namibia, vast extensions of yellow fields, that's why it's called the 'olden country'. Sossusvlei is a dune wonderland, with towering dunes up to 325m high and their rich tints vary from pale apricot to vivid reds and oranges. 130 million years old. Vast quantities of sand were carried into the Atlantic Ocean by the Orange River. This material was subsequently moved northwards by the Benguela current. The surf pushed the sand back onto land and coastal dunes developed as a result, which were shifed inland more and more wby the wind. We climbed dune 45 (110m high), climbed to sunrise, rolled down like children and then took a guided tour. One of the highlights of the entire trip and one of the most beautiful places I've seen in my life !!

Swakopmund: a bavarian style town situated between sea and desert. Drove along trans-kalahari route, really impressive and desertic !! Went for a guide tour in a township. Fascinating, three way handshake, played with kids, talked to old ladies, ate local food (including some fried caterpillars !!) and watched some girls dancing for us. One of the best things in the entire trip no doubt !! Lovely lovely country. That day we went drinking and met some locals with Mattias and we went to a nightclub. All white people but great fun anyway !! Oskah is an african name !!

Etosha national park: as big as Switzerland. Etosha means 'great white space' and it's literally that !! better sighting than in Kruger park !! Saw elephants, rhinos, giraffes and lions drinking in a waterhole !! Awesome !! Acacia is the national tree.

Waterberg Plateau: historically significant coz it was the site of the war between the Germans and the Hereros. Went hiking to the top.

Gobabis: went to a typical village, ate food and danced with them (bushmen !!). They have traditional few clothes, and the unmarried girls have nothing covering them, so they go semi naked. Strong smell of sweat, they dance and laugh all the time !! Dance, get tired and sleep !! good fun !!

then we crossed into Botswana, where I am today, and tonight we are going to the Okavango delta !! to sleep in the forest !! all great, more soon !!

hola, esto es lo que he estado haciendo en mi safari africano !!

Cape Town: vole desde Durban la noche anterior y me quede en el clasico boutique hotel donde ya me conocen. Alli conoci a varia gente en el bar y me fui de copas con ellos. El sitio era supertribal y muy africano, y alli todo vale con las chatis y todos se rozan. Vaya tela. Al dia siguiente conoci a Jon, mi compi de tienda el resto de dias, un tio muy majo y nos fuimos a dar una vuelta por el puerto. Alli me compre mi saco de dormir (que gran idea !!). Al dia siguiente conicimos al resto de la tripulacion, y descubri que soy el segundo mas joven !! todo son parejas y pensionistas, pero son majos y da igual pq estamos en Afica y esto es la leche !!

Lambert's bay: primer dia de camping, y hacia tanto frio que a penas pude dormir !! fui a correr por la tarde y hable mas con la gente. El grupo es bien majo y todo va perfecto.

Gariep River: tambien llamado Orange River, es el rio mas largo de Surafrica y nace en las montanyas de Drakensberg de Lesotho. Alli hicimos una barbacoa estupenda y nos tomamos unas cervezas al lado del fuego. Me compre una manta y mucho mejor por las noches !!!

Fish River Canyion: cruzamos la frontera de Namibia y nos dirigimos hacia este impresionante canyon. Primero paramos en unos banyos termales para un banyito rapidin. El canyon tiene 160km de largo, 27km de ancho y llega hasta 550m de profundidad. El grupo es muy majo, todo el mundo nos juntamos para hablar un poco por la noche al lado del fuego bajo las estrellas africanas. Todos ayudamos a poner las tiendas y a fregar los platos. Africa es un continente realmente especial !!

Sossusvlei: conduciendo a traves de Namibia, grandes extensiones de campos amarillos, por eso Namibia es el 'pais dorado'. Sossusvlei es un paraiso de dunas, algunas alcanzan 325m de altura, con colores espectaculares que van desde el color albaricoque hasta vivos rojos. 130 millones de anyos. Grandes cantidades de arena fueron arrastradas hacia el oceano Atlantico por el Orange River. Este material fue subsecuentemente movido hacia el norte por la corriente de Benguela. El viento y las olas empujaron esta arena hacia el interior formando dunas como resultado, que se movieron mas y mas hacia el interior gracias al viento. Alli subimos la duna 45, de 110m de altura. Subimos para ver la salida del sol, y bajamos rodando como ninyos. Despues fuimos con un guia para que nos explicara cosas. Ha sido uno de los sitios mas especiales de todo mi viaje y ciertamente uno de los sitios mas bonitos que he visto nunca !!

Swakopmund: una ciudad babara (como en Alemania, Munich) situada entre el mar y el desierto. Conducimos a traves de la ruta trans-kalahari y es altamente impresionante y desierta !! Fuimos en un tour de un barrio pobre. Alli aprendimos el saludo de tres movimientos con la mano, jugamos con ninyos, hablamos con abuelas, comimos cosas locales (incluido unos escarabajos fritos !!) y vimos a unas ninyas bailando para nosotros. Otra de las cosas que no voy a olvidar !!! Que pais tan bonito !! Esa noche fuimos a un bar y acabamos con Matias (un tio aleman muy majo) en una disco bailando con los locales !! todos blanquitos pero muy bien !! Oskah es mi nombre africano a partir de ahora !! tela marinera !!

Etosha national park: es tan grande como Suiza. Etosha quiere decir 'gran espacio blanco', y esto es literalmente lo que es !! vi mas animales que en el Kruger !! Elefantes, rinocerontes, girafas y leones bebiendo agua !!! Increible !! La acacia es el arbol nacional del pais.

Gobabis: visitamos una tipica aldea de bushman africanos a bailar con ellos !! llevan poca ropa, taparrabos a penas, y las chicas que no estan casadas no llevan nada. Un olor muy fuerte a sudor, muy particular y africano !! Bailan, se rien y cuando estan cansados se van a dormir. Inmejorable !!

despues cruzamos a Botswana, donde estamos ahora, y esta noche nos vamos a acampar al delta del rio Okavango, sin banyos ni duchas ni nada por dos dias. Ya contare !! Todo muy bien, no hay palabras para describir lo increible que es Africa !!

Drakensberg, South Africa

hi again from beautiful Cape Town ready for my next adventure (safari through Namibia and Botswana sleeping in a tent !!). This is what I've been up to these last days:

Umhlanga: very busy (school holidays) little touristy town by the sea close to Durban. It took me 2hrs to find accomodation and I ended up in a swankey B&B !! in the evening in the bar of the B&B two very ugly and old ladies (60 at least) tried to pull me. Pffff. I gave that a miss, much to their astonishment !!! holy shit.

Drakensberg: means 'dragon mountains' in Afrikaans. Sheer escarpment and otherwordly atmosphere there. Still difficult to find accomodation but found a cool studio with my own fireplace (it's winter here !!) and went for a cheese tasting. Then drove along this beautiful place !! The guys who work at the petrol station work from 6am to 8pm with no lunchbreak, shitty pay and they have to hich hike to get to work !! The following day I changed accomodation to a better a cheaper location.
Awesome, in front of a farmland !! Went for a walk in flipflops !!! It's so beautiful that I decided to stay some more days. In the mornings I could see the sunrise from my bed tucked up in a gigantic electric blanket !! One day I also went through the Sani Pass on 4WD. It's one of the highest passes in Africa, between SA and Lesotho. There I went to the highest pub in Africa (coz in Kilimanjaro there are no pubs !!) and a Basotho (people who live in Lesotho) house. They are very very poor (and envious of each other !!) and tourists coming in to visit are the only source of income. Then chatted with some kids and I gave one of them my green long sleeve shirt coz he'll need it more than me !! Very pretty and interesting, but I had a start of food poisoning and I was a bit in pain :(. Much better now though !!

all great, ready to go camping under the stars in Namibia !!

hola otra vez desde la bonita ciudad de Cape Town, preparado para mi nueva aventura (un safari a traves de Namibia y Botswana acampando en el desierto !! se va a cagar la perra !!). Esto es lo que he estado haciendo estos ultimos dias:

Umhlanga: una pequenya ciudad costera al lado de Durban llena de turistas surafricanos blanquitos. Llena de gente pq son vacaciones escolares. Me costo dos horas encontrar un sitio donde dormir, y al final me quede en un sitio de luxe !! por la noche dos abuelas feisimas y que tenian pinta de tomar de todo querian ligar conmigo. Tela marinera. No tuve cojones de decirles que no pq eran muy mayores, feisimas y con cara de drogadictas, y me fui diciedo solo buenas noches !!

Drakensberg: quiere decir 'montanyas del dragon' en Afrikaans. Son unas montanyas muy escarpadas, con sitios deshabitados y parques naturales que parece que estas en otro planeta. Aun me costo tambien encontrar sitio donde dormir, y al final encontre un estudio muy molon con mi propia llar de foc (aqui es invierno y hacia frio por las noches !!), y fui a una cata de quesos. Hablando con los tios que trabajan en la gasolinera (negritos) me contaron que trabajan de 6am a 8pm, sin parar para comer, ganando un trunyo y tienen que ir a trabajar haciendo autostop !! tela marinera. Al dia siguiente me cambie de alojamiento a uno mas barato y mas bonito en otro pueblo. Simplemente alucinante, en frente de un prado supergrande donde pastaban vacas !! Fui a dar una vuelta por las montanyas en chanclas, como los grandes, como a mi me gusta !! Por las manyanas, desde mi cama veia la salida del sol arropado en una manta electrica gigante !! Era tan bonito que me quede tres dias. Uno de los dias fui en 4x4 al Sani Pass, uno de los puertos de montanya mas altos de Africa, que conecta Surafrica y Lesotho. Alli fuimos al pub mas alto de Africa (pq en el Kilimanjaro no hay pubs !!) y a una casa Basotho (la gente que vive en Lesotho). Son indecentemente pobres y envidiosos entre si, y los turistas que venimos a traves del paso para ver sus casas son la unica fuente de ingresos que tienen. Luego hable con tres chavales y a uno le di mi jersey de manga larga verde, que le iba a hacer mas falta que a mi !! muy interesante, pero tenia principios de dolor de barriga y no me encontraba muy bien, pero ya estoy mucho mejor ahora !!!

todo estupendo, preparado para ir a acampar bajo las estrellas en Namibia !!
