Asuncion, Trinidad and Jesus, Paraguay

hi all from the south of Paraguay !! this is what I've been up to :

Asuncion: 1.2 million people in the capital of the country, shops in central streets closed during siesta, beaux art buildings, shady plazas, friendly people drinking mate in cool mugs ... that is Asuncion !! Walked around and saw the 'Palacio de Gobierno' (when Francia was in charge - a xenophobic and sinister dictator, died in 1840, ruled by fear - 'every person observed gazing at the front of his palace should be shot in the act'). Nowadays it's all good and there are just some militars guarding it !!

Trinidad and Jesus: travelled south and stayed at the small scruffy town of Encarnacion, the gateway to the nearbay Jesuit ruins at Trinidad and Jesus.
Set atop a lush green hill northeast of Encarnacion is Trinidad, Paraguay's best preserved Jesuit 'reduction' and Unesco world heritage since 1993. Jesus, 12km north is the nearly complete reconstruction of the jessuit mission that was interrupted by the Jessuit's expulsion in 1767. Very cool !!

hola a todos desde el sur del Paraguay !! esto es lo que he estado haciendo los ultimos dias:

Asuncion: 1.2 millones de personas viven en la capital del pais, tiendas en las calles principales cerradas para el honorable arte de la siesta, edificios de beaux art, plazas con sombra estupendas, gente simpatica tomando mate (te paraguayano) en tazas artisticas .... esto es Asuncion !! Me di un paseo por la ciudad y vi el 'Palacio de Gobierno' (cuando el general Francia estaba en el poder - un dictador despota y xenofobo, que murio en 1840 - 'toda persona observada mirando en frente de su palacio debia ser disparada en el acto'). Hoy ya no pasa nada afortunadamente !!

Trinidad y Jesus: viaje hacia el sur y me quede en la pequeña y tranquila ciudad de Encarnacion, simplemente pq es la entrada a las ruinas Jesuitas en Trinidad y Jesus.
Situada entre unas colinas verdes muy bonitas al noreste de Encarnacion se encuentra Trinidad, el reducto jesuita mas bien conservado del Paraguay y patrimonio nacional de la humanidad desde el 1993. Jesus, a 12km de Trinidad es la reconstruccion casi completa de la mision jesuita que fue interrumpida en el 1767 por la expulsion de los jesuitas del pais. Altamente interesante !!

Filadelfia, Paraguay

hi all,

went from Bolivia accross El Chaco to Paraguay. In dry weather (as it was) it's an arid dustbowl. It accounts for 60% of Paraguayan territory, but only 3% of population live there.
First impression of the country: bag and clothes full of dust, ongoing get-off and get-on the bus showing bags and passport fo 'officials' carrying sawn-off shotguns ... Luckily for me my spanish passport shows no problems and it's much better than the bolivian one ... A bit embarrassing altogether, esp. when the policemen start flirting obviously with the paraguayan women and they are also teasing them ... pfffffff. In this border territory I had mi first encounter with 'guarani', a local language previous to the spanish !!

Filadelfia: surprising collection of modern blonde teenagers in big trucks in dustry streets !! Some 14,000 mennoites live in that area (originally come from Canada, Russia, Ukraine and Germany, all from german ancestors. They speak a sort of old german, and in terms of what they are, they are just a religious movement that believe in adult baptism, in separation of church and state, opposition to military service, and they don't seek any interaction with the world, they just want to be left alone!!). This looks like the USA ... spooky !! 175,000 mennonites in the USA, 25,000 in Canada. I also visited the colony of 'Loma Plata', the oldest and more traditional of the mennonite settlements. Very interesting altoghether !!

the following day took a bus and left for Asuncion !!

cruce el sur de Bolivia hacia Paraguay a traves de El Chaco. En temporada seca (como era el caso) es un sitio arido, lleno de matorrales y de polvo. Aunque El Chaco ocupa el 60% del territorio nacional, solo el 3% de la poblacion vive alli.
Primeras impresiones de Paraguay: mi maleta y la ropa se llenaron de polvo en el viaje, un sinparar de bajar subir del autobus desaciendo la maleta y mostrando pasaportes a 'oficiales' que llevan escopetas recortadas ... Afortunadamente para mi, mi pasaporte español es seguro y me dejaban en paz, no como a los pobres bolivianos ... Un poco vergonzoso todo, sobretodo cuando estos 'oficiales' empezaban a flirtear con las chicas paraguayas, que se dejaban ... Tela marinera ... Por esas tierras fronterizas me encontre con gente que solo habla 'guarani', una lengua local anterior al español y que la mayoria de gente usa !!

Filadelfia: sorprendente coleccion de adolescentes rubios y modernos en pickups que van arriba y abajo por calles desiertas llenas de polvo !! Algo mas de 14,000 menonitas viven en el area (originarios de Canada, Rusia, Ucraina y Alemania, aunque todos con antepasados alemanes. Hablan una especia de aleman antiguo, y respecto a su religion, son simplemente un movimiento religioso que cree en el bautismo adulto, en la separacion de iglesia y estado, en la oposicion a las armas, y que no busca interaccion alguna con el resto de la sociedad mundial, simplemente quieren que se les deje en paz !!). Esto parece los USA ... vaya tela !! En los USA viven unos 175,000 menonitas, y en Canada unos 25,000. Tambien visite la colonia de 'Loma Plata', el mas antiguo y tradicional de los asentamientos menonitas. Altamente interesante !!

al dia siguiente agarre un bus hasta Asuncion, la capital !!

La Paz & Santa Cruz, Bolivia

hi all from Santa Cruz !!

some days ago I left for La Paz, the world highest capital (3600m). While the sun is shining temps may reach the high teens, but at evenings it often gets below freezing !! Quite the wrong name for such a scruffy and chaotic city really !! It's full of people crossing streets and running around !! Since cold cities are not my kind of place, I just got there and took a overnight bus (I was the only tourist!!) to warmer Santa Cruz. Before that though, I walked around town and visited the 'Museo de la Coca' (looks at the coca use as a soft-drink in pharmaceutical industries, the use in traditional societies and the growth of cocaine as an illicit drug), very interesting !!
Santa Cruz. I love it when I get to a place where men go with open shirts and flipflops and women with small tops and sandals !! It's definitely my kind of place !! I had 'chicha' (a refreshing drink) and it just happened to be the weekend of the celebration of the creation of the city !! It's megabusy and there is a very good vibe !! Santa Cruz is Bolivia's second largest city, but visitors enjoy the frontier feel and tropical ambience (one can see dead armadillos in the market and sloths hangind out in the trees of the main square !!).

hola a todos desde Santa Cruz !!

hace unos dias tome un bus hacia La Paz, la capital mas alta del mundo (3600m). Mientras el sol luce, las temperaturas llegan casi hasta los 20ºC, pero por las noches la temperatura cae hasta bajo cero !! Lo cierto es que la ciudad tiene el nombre equivocado, porque es una ciudad caotica y bastante desordenada, llena de gente corriendo y cruzando las calles sin mirar !! Como las ciudades grandes y frias no son lo mio, el mismo dia que llegue tome un autobus nocturno (era el unico turista !!) a la calida Santa Cruz. Antes me pasee por la ciudad y visite el Museo de la Coca (da una mirada al uso de la coca como bebida refrescane, a su uso en la industria farmaceutica, en las sociedades tradicionales y en la produccion de la cocaina como droga ilegal), muy interesane !!
Santa Cruz. Me encanta cuando llego a un sitio donde los hombres van con camisa abierta hasta el ombligo y van con chanclas, y las chicas van con tops pequeños y sandalias !! Asi es Santa Cruz !! Definitivamente mi tipo de ciudad !! Tome 'chicha' helada (como leche merengada) y justo este fin de semana es el aniversario de la creacion de la ciudad y hay fiestas por la calle !! Esta llenisimo de gente y hay muy buena onda, que dicen por aqui !! Santa Cruz es la segunda ciudad de Bolivia, y a pesar de ello los visitantes se relajan en el ambiente fronterizo y tropical de la ciudad (se ven armadillos muertos para vender en el mercado, y osos perezosos durmiendo en las ramas de los arboles de la plaza principal !!).
Esta noche tomo un bus nocturno hacia Paraguay !! mas desde alli,

Titicaca, Bolivia

hi all from Titicaca !!

staying in Copacabana (3800m), a small village by the awesome lake. When I got here yesterday I had trout for lunch (the speciality over here) and climbed Cerro del Calvario.
Today I took a trip to Isla del Sol ('island of the sun'). According the legend inca, the sun and the moon were born here, and the first emperor inca and his wife rose mystically from the rock called Titicaca ('rock of the puma') also on Isla del Sol. Both points are within metres from each other. That happened around 1500 years BC... Anyway, the lake has depths of around 300m, and there are some strange fish that live down there that apparently are delicious !! Oh, and again went on flipflops and it was very very cold coz of the wind on the deck!! But it was sunny as soon as we started walking !!
Today is 21/9, first day of spring and there are lots of celebrations in town. It's also the day of the lovers (a sort of Valentine's) and boys have to write and read love poems to their lovers !! Another thing here is that people called each other 'tio', like in Spain !! Funny !! And got the liking now for the 'mate de coca' after every meal. Awesome !!

hola a todos desde el Titicaca !!

me estoy quedando en Copacabana (3800m), una pequeña ciudad junto al magnifico lago. Cuando llegue aqui ayer me comi trucha frita (la especialidad local) en el mercado (con los locals !!) y luego subi al Cerro del Calvario desde donde se ve el pueblo.
Hoy he ido a la isla del Sol. De acuerdo con la leyenda inca, el sol y la luna nacieron justo alli, y el primer emperador inca y su mujer surgieron tambien misticamente de este punto, desde la roca llamada Titicaca (roca del puma) en la isla. Esto debio ocurrir hacia el 1500 antes de cristo ... Bueno, el lago tiene profundidades de 300m, y por alla abajo habitan peces rarisimos que al parecer estan bien buenos. Ah, y hoy tambien fui en chanclas, como los grandes, y como hacia mogollon de frio en la cubierta del barco casi me congelo !! Luego ya estuvo bien cuando empezamos a caminar !!
Hoy es 21/9, el primer dia de la primavera y hay mogollon de celebraciones en el pueblo. Es tambien el dia de los enamorados, donde los chicos tienen que escribir y recitar poemas de amor a sus enamoradas. Vaya tela. Otra cosa aqui es que la gente se llaman unos a otros 'tio', como en España, superpeculiar !! Ah, y ya le he pillado el gustillo y me tomo mate de coca despues de cada comida !! Delicioso !!

Mas pronto, intentare coger un bus a La Paz mañana por la mañana !!

Cuzco, Peru

hi all,

Cuzco is a beautiful city (3300m) that once was the foremost city of the Inca empire, and it's the continent's oldest continuosly inhabited city. Pizarro killed the inca Atawallpa in 1533 and conquered the city. There is a funny mix of inca and christian culture all around town !! I walked around chilling out the first day. I also tried to change the routing of my ticket but it is proving exceptionally difficult !! Anyway, that day I also visited 'Qorikancha' (golden courtyard), the most important temple in the inca empire. The site was also an observatory, and there are dozens or beautiful inca walls dotted around town.

The following day I visited the amazing Machu Picchu (2400m) !!

Despite the great tourist influx, the site manages to retain its air of grandeur and mistery, and is a must if you come around here in Peru !! The inca pre-eminence only lasted 100 years and it reached from Ecuador to Chile. An american historian looking for some lost cities bumped into it in 1911. There was no gold coz the incas had taken it all with them when they fled from the spaniards. When the conquistadores arrived, the incas left Machu Picchu and all of the other cities and resisted in the mountains of Vilcabamba for 37 years. It all ended when the last leader inca was killed, and all the other remaining incas fled to the jungle. Machu Picchu was built in about 40 years, 500 people were living in it (some selected elite). The mountains have the shape of a condor flying (by the way, the condor does seldom fly, he just glides thanks the currents of air), and that's the major significance, that the site was built in a special place, with magic meaning !! The legend says that the incas that fled after the spaniards, left for 'the city of gold' (Tarapipi), 60 days walking through the jungle from Machu Picchu, that no white man can enter that place (he wouldd be killed), and they are awaiting for the return of the inca culture !! Amazing !!

all good, catched a night bus and crossed into Bolivia !!

Cuzco es una bonita ciudad que una vez fue la ciudad mas importante del imperio Inca, y es la ciudad mas antigua de America que ha estado continuamente habitada. Pizarro y su ejercito mataron al inca Atawallpa en 1533 y conquirieron la ciudad para los españoles. Hay por toda la ciudad una extraña y curiosa mezcla de cultura inca y cristiana. El primer dia camine por la ciudad tranquilamente, respirando su historia. Tambien trate de cambiar la rura de mi billete de avion pero es mas complicado de lo que podria parecer. Vaya tela... Bueno, ese dia tambien visite 'Qorikancha' (el patio de oro), el templo mas importante del imperio Inca, que tambien servia las veces de observatorio. Hay docenas de maravillosas paredes incas esparcidas por toda la ciudad que uno puede tocar y sentir la historia.

Al dia siguiente subi al magico y maravilloso Machu Picchu !!

A pesar de la gran cantidad de turistas (la mayoria de ellos torpones), Machu Picchu aun mantiene ese aire de grandeza y misterio, y no hay que saltarselo si se viene por aqui en Peru !! El apogeo de los incas a penas duro 100 años y su territorio se extendia desde Ecuador hasta Chile. Un historiador americano descubrio Machu Picchu en 1911 cuando buscaba ciudades perdidas de los incas. No habia nada de oro porque los incas se lo habian llevado cuando huyeron de los españoles. Cuando los conquistadores llegaron a destruir su imperio, los incas abandonaron Machu Picchu y el resto de las ciudades incas y se refugiaron en las montañas de Vilcabamba durante 37 años. La cosa acabo cuando mataron al ultimo lider inca, y todos los demas incas se fueron a la selva. Machu Picchu fue construido en 40 años, y solo unas 500 personas (una elite) vivian alli. Las montañas de alrededor tienen la forma de un condor volando (que por cierto, el condor casi nunca vuela, planea usando las corrientes de aire de los cañones), y esto es lo magico, que el sitio no fue escogido al azar, sino que lo construyeron alli por alguna razon !! La leyenda dice que los incas se refugiaron a la selva y aun viven alli en la 'ciudad de oro' (Tarapipi), donde ningun hombre blanco ha llegado todavia, a 60 dias de camino desde Machu Picchu a traves de la jungla y donde esperan pacientemente al resurgir del inca !! alucinante !!

todo bien, cogi un bus nocturno infernal y cruce hacia Bolivia !!
