Maseru, Lesotho

just a quick update:

Aliwal north: working my way up to Lesotho I drove to this city in the middle of nowhere. I took a xhosa lady (poor she was standing in the cold) and we drove together 2 hours. She has a pretty sad story but always has a smile in her face !! That night I slept in the roof of a very cool farm, and it was so cold that my car was completely frozen the next morning !!

Maseru: quite a scruffy and messy place, that looks dangerous in the evenings. All accomodation here is very expensive and overrated !! at the end I got one hotel not too bad. I went out with the cook of the hotel and walked around town. He said he was going to cook something typical from Lesotho for me ... but when I showed up at dinner time there was fish and chips !!! big flop !!

today I am in Bethlehem and it took me literally 1 hour to find the internet shop coz nobody knew anything about it !!

all great in this big fascinating country !!

hola, un update rapidin:

Aliwal north: de camino a Lesotho decidi parar en esta ciudad en medio de la nada !! recogi por el camino a una mujer Xhosa (la vi paradita en la carretera y hacia mogollon de frio ...) y conducimos juntos dos horas. Tiene una historia bastante triste, pero siempre tenia una sonrisa a punto !! Dormi en lo alto de una antiguo establo, y por la manyana hacia tanto frio que me encontre mi coche completamente helado. Y yo en chanclas !!!

Maseru: una ciudad bastante fea y chola, que me temo es bastante peligrosa por las noches. Todos los hoteles son supercaros y bastante cutres para lo que se paga, pero al final encontre uno que no estaba del todo mal. Me fui con el cocinero de mi hotel a dar una vuelta por la ciudad y me dijo que iba a cocinar algo tipical de Lesotho para mi ... y cuando fui a cenar me dio pescado con patatas !! tela marinera !! vaya bluf !!! pfffffffffff.

hoy estoy en Bethlehem, y me ha llevado una hora encontrar el unico cafe internet del pueblo pq nadie lo conoce !! para mear y no echar gota !!

todo bien desde este grande, fascinante y maravilloso pais !!

Eastern Cape, South Africa

hi from rural south africa !!

this is what I've been up to these last days:

Addo National Park: it's an elephant reserve and this is just spectacular !! Driving along the park you can see many 'boks', whartogs and elephants !! There's a spot where they where 1m away from my car !! the best thing ever !! 3 comments: 1) the elephants do a gentle sound when they walk, 2) when they eat the only noise you can hear are the birds, 3) they eat an average of 16h/day !!. Staying in a really cool tent with direct views to the park !! the sounds and views are just phenomenal !!

Port Alfred: small coastal city. Very windy beach (it's winter here and it's too cold to swim). Just came here to relax and to run along the beach !! Party at my swankey b&b, got pissed and ended up singing in a karaoke bar where I was the youngest !!

Cintsa: in the wild coast (Transkei). Long beautiful beaches with dunes and rough sea. Staying in a nice cottage in front of the beach.

Coffee Bay: Small pretty place by the sea. This is the area where Xhosa people live. Villages of round, brightly painted huts dotted accross the hillsides. Roads here don't appear on maps and animals and people are in the middle of the road !! Took a mother and her two kids in my car, and she left a bag with baked buns behind !! I took another lady later on and I gave them to her for her kids (and I had another one) !! People here are really nice and friendly, and go wrapped up in colourful furry clothes !! this is the picture one has in his head of rural Africa !! Awesome !!

esto es lo que he estado haciendo estos ultimos dias:

Addo National Park: es una reserva de elefantes y es sencillamente espectacular !! Conduciendo a traves del parque se pueden ver ciervos ('boks'), jabalies salvajes y mogollon de elefantes !! hay un sitio donde los elefantes pasaban a un metro de mi coche !! alucinante !! 3 comentarios: 1) los elefantes hacen un ruido suave al caminar, 2) cuando comen el unico ruido que se oye son los pajaros de alrededor, 3) comen una media de 16 horas al dia !! Me quede en una tienda divina con vistas directas al parque !! los sonidos y las vistas eran tremendos !!

Port Alfred: una pequenya ciudad costera con una playa con mucho viento (aqui es invierno ahora mismo y el agua esta demasiado fria para nadar). Vine aqui para relajarme y correr por la playa !! Hubo una fiesta en mi hotel y acabamos cantando en un karaoke local lleno de abuelos !!! pfffffff.

Cintsa: en la 'wild coast' (Transkei). Playas largas y preciosas con dunas y un mar muy agitado. Me quede en una cabanyita preciosa en frente del mar.

Coffee Bay: es un pueblecin al lado del mar. Esta en el Transkei tambien, que es el area donde vive la gente 'Xhosa'. Pueblecitos de casitas redondas, pintadas de vivisimos colores esparcidas a lo largo de las colinas. Las carreteras no aparecen en los mapas y los animales y la gente local cruzan la carretera sin mirar !! ayer pille a una madre y sus dos hijos que hacian autostop, y al bajarse se dejaron una bolsa con bollos !! luego pille a otra senyora y le regale los bollos (yo ya me habia comido dos !!). La gente aqui es supermaja, y se interesan cuando un blanquito se acerca a hablar con ellos !! Como es invierno todos llevan unos abrigos supergordos de colores !! esta es la imagen mental que uno tiene de la Africa rural !! sensacional !!

Western Cape, South Africa

hi,

this is what I've done in Western Cape:

15/6. Went to Boschendal winery in Franschoek. Really cool wine tasting. I have no idea at all, but because I was spanish they thought I knew !! The landscape was just amazing, not the idea I had of South Africa at all. Many wineries and farms, surrounded by big and spectacular mountains. I bought a 'Jean Le Long Sauvignon blanc 2005'. Beautiful. In the evening there was a bbq in my cool hotel with free beer. Not bad !!

16/6. When I got to the car I found it open with the glove compartment wide open and my bottle of wine missing !! they've nicked it, damn !! Anyway, left Cape Town and went to Hermanus a pretty village by the sea. I stayed in a dorm to save some Rand !! it's full of white people and again you wouldn't say this is Africa, so getting the hell out of here asap !! Saw some dolphins and a whale !! Awesome !!

17/6. Prince Albert, the Karoo. There's something almost magical about the vast and arid Karoo. Wide-open spaces make you feel so tiny, towns make you feel you've been suspended in time. It's a place in the middle of nowhere, where life moves slowly. Black and whites again do not mix, 900 whites and 4000 blacks living in different parts of the small town. Went for a walk and to see the sunset with Dick, the 60 year old owner of my B&B. Very cool place.

18/6. So cool that stayed one more night !! Went rock climbing to probably somewhere has never been before (because it was the wrong pass) !! chilling out in this amazing place.

19/6. On my way to Addo National park, stopped today in a small city Plattenberg Bay, simply to go running in the beach and chill out.

hola, esto es lo que he estado haciendo en Western Cape:

15/6. Fui a los vinyedos Boschendal, en Franschoek. Es un sitio con mucho renombre aqui y hice una cata de vinos !! No tengo ni puta idea de vinos, pero como vengo de cerca del Penedes se pensaban que sabia mogollon y me preguntaban cosas ... pffff. El paisaje es alucinante, no la idea que tenia de Surafrica !! Muchos vinyedos y granjas, rodeados de montanyas espectaculares !! Eran las 11 de la manyana y me tuve que dar un paseo para que se me pasara la bolinga. Me compre un 'Jean Le Long Sauvignon blanc 2005'. Buenisimo. Por la noche hubo una barbacoa en mi hotel con cerveza gratis. No estuvo nada mal !!

16/6. cuando fui a buscar el coche por la manyana, me lo encontre abierto, con la guantera abierta y mi vino habia desaparecido !! Me habian robado, hijosdeputa !! bueno, es solo el vino, pero tela marinera. Ahora siempre dejo la guantera abierta !! Bueno, me fui para Hermanus, un pueblecito de la costa donde se pueden ver ballenas que pasan aqui el invierno. Me quede en un dormitorio para ahorrarme unos Rand ... Esta tan lleno de genta blanca rica que solo me quede unas horas y me fui pronto por la manyana !! Antes vi delfines y alguna ballena !! alucinante !!

17/6. Prince Albert, the Karoo. Hay algo casi magico en el vasto y arido Karoo. Amplios espacios abiertos desiertos te hacen sentir muy pequenyo. En las minusculas ciudades parece que el tiempo se haya detenido. Asi es Prince Albert, un pueblo en el medio del desierto donde la vida pasa despacio. Los blancos y los negros no se mezclan aqui tampoco, 900 blancos y 4000 negros viven separados. Fui a correr y luego a ver la puesta de sol con Dick, el propietario de mi B&B. Muy interesante hablar !!

18/6. Se esta tan bien aqui que me quede una noche mas !! subi una montanya por una parte que seguramente nadie ha pasado, pq no era el camino correcto !! pfff. Estuvo muy bien, me pase la tarde haciendo deporte y relajandome. Ah, y viendo el futbol en mi habitacion !!

19/6. De camino a Addo National park, he parado hoy en una pequenya ciudad costera que se llama Plattenberg Bay. Simplemente me he quedado en un buen B&B y he ido a correr por la playa en plan capitan !!

Cape Town, South Africa

hi from Cape Town !!

this is one of the coolest and most pretty cities in the world !! When I got here it was raining and it was cold, but I still liked the city. It has a strange feeling of danger and comfort, pretty weird. The first thing that shocked me was that all shops have the doors barred and you have to call to get in. There are nice cafes and restaurants where I've been chilling out.
On day two I went to Robben Island, the place where Nelson Mandela and other black political activists where imprisoned during Appartheid before it finished 11 years ago. Very interesting, the guide had been inside as well !! In the evening I had dinner with Ronelle and Ralph and it was great fun.
Day 3, today, I've rented the coolest car, an old VW Golf, with no radio, air-con or nothing !! Been driving to the most southern point of Africa and it's really awesome. On my way there I stopped at a penguin colony and Camps Bay (arguably the most pretty beach I've seen in a city, together with Ipanema in Rio) !! the only thing is that the water is too cold here ... Staying tonight in a trendy boutique hotel, coz saw it and couldn't resist !!

hola desde Ciudad del Cabo !!

esta es una de las ciudades mas alucinantes y bonitas del mundo !! Cuando llegue aqui estaba lloviendo y hacia frio, pero aun asi la ciudad tiene algo que me gusta !! Hay una sensacion permanente de peligro/emocion/comfort que es increible. La primera cosa que me choco fue que en las tiendas hay una reja con barrotes para entrar y hay que tocar un timbre para que te abran. Hay muchos cafes y restaurantes muy agradables donde paso bastante tiempo viendo a la gente !!
El segundo dia fui a Robben Island, la isla donde Nelson Mandela y otros activistas negros fueron encarcelados durante el Appartheid (que acabo hace 11 anyos). Muy interesante, y el guia que hacia la visita tambien habia estado encarcelado alli. Por la noche cene con Ronelle y Ralph (surafricanos blanquitos) y estuvo muy bien. Ah, y aprendi bastantes cosas de la cultura surafricana (que no todo es tan facil como uno se piensa ...) !!
Dia 3, hoy. He alquilado el coche mas trendy del mundo, supercholo, un VW Golf viejo, sin radio ni nada de color azul !! He conducido al punto mas sur de Africa, y es simplemente increible !! De camino para alli he parado en una colonia de pinguinos, y en Camps Bay (que esta entre las playas mas bonitas del mundo dentro de una ciudad, tal vez con Ipanema en Rio, lo unico es que aqui el agua esta superfria !!). Esta noche me quedo en un hotel trendy (un 'boutique hotel') con las habitaciones superparanoicas, que cuando lo vi no me pude resistir !!
