Apia, 'Upolu, Samoa

hi from Samoa (to be pronounced Saaamoa) !!

flew on wednesday morning from Auckland and got into Apia on tuesday morning !! We just crossed the international time line !! Funny. Anyway, got installed into a cheap motel in town (that looks more like a small village) and went walking around. Saw a small but pretty museum, a market, the promenade and other stuff they've got here. The place is full of obese people, but very friendly. Sometimes they have this 'musu' thing (they don't feel like talking to you any more) though ... They speak Samoan, which is not too far away from hawaiian (as if this made any difference to me...). Well, tomorrow off to the other island (Savai'i) to catch some sun I hope. Back on flip flops and t-shirts !

vole el miercoles por la manyana, pero he llegado aqui el martes por la manyana !! Es que hemos cruzado la lines internacional del tiempo, supercurioso !! Bueno, me he instalado en un motel chamizo y he salido a dar una vuelta. La ciudad (que es la capital de Samoa) es superpequenya, pero hace sol y la gente es supersimpatica. Eso si, tambien estan supergordos !! algunos tienen cara de mala leche, pero luego te sueltan 'how's it going bro' y ya todo va mejor !! A algunos les pasa una cosa que se llama 'musu' (de repente cuando te estan contando algo no tienen mas ganas de hablar y se quedan callados ...). Manyana me voy a la otra isla, Savai'i, donde estare en unas cabanyas al lado del mar y intentare volverme a poner en forma y moreno !!

Auckland, last thoughts from New Zealand

time for another quick update of what we've been up to these last days :

18/5 on our way to the Glaciars in the South Island.

19/5 climbed a bit of the Franz Josef Glaciar !! It was fantastic, the highlight of the trip I reckon !! Phenomenal views. Some good things: the ice looks blue because of the scattering of light through the small bubbles in the ice and other small things. It affects more to light with small wavelenght, so that is blue light !! and that's why we see them blue-ish. Anyway, the Franz Josef is a warm glaciar, sitting on a river and advancing around 40cm/day !! awesome !!

20/5 Wanaka. Beautiful small city by an amazing lake. Must be a top destination for winter sports. We went hiking and at night we went out and got superpissed dancing in a surfer bar !!

21/5 on our way back to Christchurch. Got too late and we almost cannot make it to the campervan !!

22/5 Christchurch. Walk around the city. Saw the contemporary art museum with some pretty interesting stuff inside.

23/5. Auckland. Said goodbye to Leena at lunchtime. Now I am stuck here in a crappy motel by the airport coz tomorrow flying at 6am to Samoa !!

more from sunny Samoa !! All good, very intense, lots of emotiona. As always, when you leave a friend one has a sad feeling, especially having been 24x7 with the same person, but all this feelings are filling me up and makin me enjoy life and this trip very much.

hola, unos updates rapidines de lo que hemos estado haciendo estos ultimos dias:

18/5 de camino hacia los glaciares de la South Island.

19/5 subimos un poco del Glaciar Franz Josef !! Fue sencillamente fantastico, creo que uno de los momentos mas bonitos de mi viaje !! Unas vistas fenomenales. Algunos datos de interes: el hielo parece azul pq la luz dispersada por las burbujillas y otras particulas dentro del hielo afecta mas a la luz de longitud de onda corta (la azul)!! Bueno, el Franz Josef es un glaciar 'caliente' pq esta encima de un rio, y avanza unos 40cm/dia !! esto si que es unico en el mundo !!

20/5 Wanaka. Preciosa ciudad al lado de un lago. Es una ciudad perfecta en hinvierno para la gente que le gusta esquiar !! Hicimos un poco de trekking por las montanyas y nos agarramos un pedal bailando en un bar de surfetas !! Vaya tela !!

21/5 de camino a Christchurch. Llegamos mogollon de tarde y casi nos perdemos !!

22/5 Christchurch. Paseo por la ciudad. Vimos el museo de arte contemporaneo donde habian exposiciones muy interesantes.

23/5. Auckland. Acabo de despedirme de Leena este mediodia. Ahora estoy en un supechamizo al lado del aeropuerto, pero con cama y habitacion para mi solo. Manyana vuelo a las 6 de la manyana hacia Samoa !! vuelo manyana pero llegare hoy por lo de la linia del tiempo que cruzaremos !!

mas desde Samoa, con sandalias espero. Todo muy bien y bonito. Muchas emociones pq han sido dos semanas muy intensas, como unas vacaciones. Ahora que vuelvo a estar solo es dificil otra vez, y cada vez que se deja de ir con alguien se siente un vacio que me llena. Esto me hace sentir muchas emociones que hacen la pena seguir de viaje !! Sempre endavant.

The South Island, NZ

hi from the beautiful south island in NZ !!

this is just amazing. Still a bit cold for my shorts and t-shirts but great !! This is more or less what we've done with our supercool campervan:

15/5 after several cancellations we could jump on a ferry to cross from Wellington to the South Island

16/5 we went to Abel Tasmal National Park, in the north of the South Island and we did a beautiful trekking. Lots of amazing beaches (water a bit cold though, 12 degrees !!) and lush vegetation

17/5 heading down towards the glaciers. Stopped at sunset and saw the 'pancake rocks' a beautiful formation in the coast. The scenery is just awesome and it was great fun driving along the coast. We have been many days together Leena and me, and sometimes it's hard to be 24x7 with somebody, but we are doing pretty ok I reckon !! Yesterday we saw a movie in our supercampervan (has got a DVD player !!)

anyway, we are going to the Franz Josef Glaciar later on today coz tomorrow we are doing some trekking there !!

hola desde la espectacular South Island en NZ !!

esto es increible !! aunque hace un pelin de frio para ir en camiseta y en pantalon corto como voy yo, en plan capitan !! (bueno, me compre algo de ropa en Auckland ...). Esto es lo que hemos hecho mas o menos en nuestra superautocaravana:

15/5 despues de varias cancelaciones pudimos ir en un ferry desde Wellington a la isla sur

16/5 fuimos al Abel Tasmal National Park, en el norte de la South Island e hicimos un dia de trekking precioso. Muchas playas espectaculares que estan superllenas en verano, pero ahora (agua a 12C) no habia ni el Tato. Mogollon de vegetacion espectacular y lo pasamos de miedo !!

17/5 vamos tirando hacia los dos glaciares. Paramos para la puesta del sol y vimos los 'pancake rocks', unas formaciones rocosas al lado del mar que tienen forma de pancake !! Es alucinantemente bonito, y luego continuamos conduciendo al lado de la costa que es divina. Ya llevamos una semana viviendo juntos Leena y yo, 24x7, y aunque a veces es un poco cansado, nos llevamos bastante bien !! Ayer alquilamos un DVD y lo pusimos en nuestra supercaravana (que tiene para comer, dormir, leer y conducir todo en un espacio super reducido !!)

bueno, esta tarde vamos hacia el Franz Josef Glaciar pq manyana hacemos un trekking alli !! No nos quedan muchos dias, y habra que sacrificar cosas, pero vamos a ver que se puede hacer !!

todo bien en esta isla tan bonita y espectacular !!

North Island, NZ

hi from Wellington,

after driving all the way from Auckland passing by the Hot Water beach (too late coz tide was already high !! but we still swam at the beach !!), we spent the night at Tauranga. The day after we headed down to Rotorua and Taupo we have arrived today to Wellington. We have stayed in beautiful parks and awesome hot springs, we have seen beautiful scenery, done some jogging and driven under heavy rain. It's 24x7 Leena and me in a small campervan (were we drive, cook and sleep) and this is creating some tensions (like right now !!) but hopefully things will shape up ... !! This country is really pretty, and cold now in May too !! Anyway, we are so hungry that we are rushing now to grab something to eat. The sensible thing was not to go to the south island and explore in depth the north island, but I guess we are not too sensible at all and we are off tomorrow to the south and magic island !!

hola desde Wellington,

despues de conducir todo el dia desde Auckland, pasamos por la Hot Water Beach (un sitio con zonas de agua caliente donde te puedes tumbar a hacer el canelo, pero llegamos un pelin tarde y nos banyamos igualmente en agua fria !!). Ese dia dormimos en Tauranga. Al dia siguiente nos dirigimos hacia Rotorua y Taupo, y desde alli hacia Wellington, donde hemos llegado hoy. Hemos estado en parques preciosos y banyos de agua caliente alucinantes. Hemos visto paisajes divinos, hecho jogging y conducido bajo una lluvia intensa. Estamos solo Leena y yo en nuestra supercaravana, donde conducimos, cocinamos y dormimos !! hay momentos de tension y cabreos (como ahora ...) pero espero que la situacion mejore !! Bueno, vamos a comer algo, que vamos hacia la isla sur manyana !! no es la decision mas conservadora, pq estamos haciendo mogollon de kilometros, pero es la mas divertida y nos han dicho que la isla sur es tremenda ....

Auckland, New Zealand

hi,

after stopping over in Hong Kong I got to Auckland yesterday. A beautiful coastal city, with not a very big city centre and full of shops !! It reminds me a wee bit of England, but with a more relaxed attititude and people are extremely friendly. Anyway, I went to pick up yesterday Leena from the airport at 1am !! and today we will decide on our action plan. She is into camping in the mountains, but it's raining all the time here, quite cold (12 Celsius), and I only have summertime clothes, so will see ... !!! tomorrow they come to pick us up coz we are renting a campervan !! that should be cool !! more soon !!

hola !!

despues de hacer escala en Hong Kong, llegue ayer a Auckland, Nueva Zelanda. Es como nos decian en la escuela el punto mas alejado de Catalunya, pero la gente es gente y las ciudades son ciudades, y no parece para nada que estemos tan lejos !! Auckland es una ciudad muy bonita, parecida a Vancouver en Canada, al lado de la costa y con ambiente de regata, con mogollon de veleros amarrados en el puerto. Bueno, ayer llego tambien Leena, mi amiga de Finlandia y hoy vamos a decidir que hacemos. Manyana nos llega la autocaravana que hemos alquilado (que creo que es superchamiza y solo hay unos sofas para dormir y basta), y a Leena le gusta acampar en la montanya y va superpreparada de ropa de invierno (con muy buen criterio porque aqui no para de llover y hace 12 grados) y a mi me gusta la playa y no tengo nada de ropa para la lluvia o el frio ... pffffff !! bah, ya veremos lo que hacemos, pero este parece un pais precioso !!

Bangkok, Thailand

hi,

just a quick post to say that I spent a day and a hald in Bangkok in a posh hotel by the river with a massive bed and swimming pool !! I visited some temples and some cool malls and basically recovered from the long trip from the day before. What a nice and interesting city though !! I am now in Hong Kong airport, in transit on my way to Auckland. A bit sad to leave Asia, but time to see new things !! More soon,

un mensaje rapidin para decir que he pasado un dia y medio en un hotel de lujo en Bangkok, incluso consiguiendo mantener mi budget !! Me he pasado el dia que tenia alli entre visitando templos, centros comerciales, en la piscina y hablando con la gente !! Que ciudad tan interesante !! Bueno, ahora estoy en el aeropuerto de Hong Kong esperando a mi vuelo a Auckland, un poco triste de dejar SE Asia, pero con ganas de ver cosas nuevas !! Mas muy pronto !!

Damai beach, Sarawak, Malaysia

just a quick post to say that after Kutching we went with Roberth, Ice and Katja to a villa that we found on a guide !! Excellent place, nice swimming pool, the villa for ourselves, cool stuff, very cheap, next to the beach and a nice owner from the Iban tribe in Sarawak that is loaded and drives like crazy !! He showed us the nightlife from Kutching and got two impressions: many girls above 25 years old are left on the shelf, and there are a lot of chinese people. Anyway, luckily enough after drinking we made it home and we stayed the next day recovering in the beach and in the swimming pool. Today I said goodbye to everybody and now I am in an cybercafe in Kota Kinabalu waiting for my delayed flight to Bangkok. I will be staying in an expensive hotel (before I hit NZ and the campervan), coz I am worth it !!

hola,

un post rapidin para decir que despues de Kutching me fui con Roberth, Ice y Katja a una vila en una colina al lado de la playa !! Un sitio excepcional, con la casa para nosotros, una piscina alucinante, una gente maravillosa y el propietario, un indio Iban que esta zumbadisimo y nos ensenyo Kutching de noche. Aun no se ni como llegamos a casa, pero dos cosas de la noche de Kutching: hay muchas chicas que despues de los 25 no van a encontrar novio nunca, y esta lleno de genge de origen chino. Una ciudad particularisima y con muchos mas turistas que van a venir pronto, me ofrecieron comprar un bar por 10,000 Euros y se lo voy a comentar a Lluis a ver que le parece !! Esta manyana me he despedido de todo el mundo, y ahora estoy en un cafe en Kota Kinabalu esperando a mi vuelo retrasado para Bangkok, y me quedare en un hotel que he reservado, que me lo merezco !!

Kutching, Sarawak, Malaysia

hi from Kutching ('cat' in malay) !!

after getting drunk in a karaoke in Kapit (a fishing village on our way to Kutching) with an engligh guy and a german girl we made our way to the top left of Borneo, Kutching. Here we met again Katja and Ice, a nice dutch couple and now we are going together the 4 of us (also Roberth). We got sunburnt on the boat on our way here but now we are tanned !! Anyway, now we are chilling in Kuching, a pretty city with two interesting museums, a nice waterfront and lots of handcraft (although many things are chinese copies ... pfffff). The city has a very colonial flavour I'd say !! today we may go to the cinema and tomorrow off to spend my two last days in Borneo by a beach (weather permitting !!) more soon !!

hola desde Kutching ('gato' en malayo !!)

despues de mazarnos con un ingles y una alemana en un karaoke en Kapit (un pueblo pequenyisimo de pescadores de camino a Kutching), cogimos un barco a la manyana siguiente. Alli nos volvimos a encontrar a una pareja bien maja de holandeses (Katja y Ice) y ahora vamos con ellos. Nos quemamos mogollon en el barco, pero hoy ya estamos morenos !! Kutching es una ciudad pequenyita pero cuca, con un par de museos interesantes, un paseo maritimo precioso y muchas paraditas para comprar artesania local (que son replicas falsisimas hechas en china !! pfffffff !!!). Bueno, hoy igual vamos al cine, y manyana si no nos llueve a pasar los ultimos dos dias en Borneo tirados en la playa !!

Belaga, Sarawak, Malaysia

hi from Sarawak !!

after quite a long trip from Brunei through the north of Sarawak (the second state in Borneo that is part of Malaysia) we got to the small town of Belaga. It's lost in the middle of Sarawak's jungle, and only accessible by 4wD, boat of small plane. There we got in contact with some local people who were going to take us to a 'Longhouse', a massive building build next to the riverbank, made of wood and that contains a lot of small houses with up to 100 families. They have their microcomunity and there is a chief for every long house. Anyway, we were told to go just there with two local guys that we met in a cafe, and the problem we encountered in the first one was that we were not very welcome. We entered one house people were not very nice to us (completely understandable if somebody comes to your house unexpectedly !!). The second longhouse that we visited was a bit better, but nothing excepcional either ... Like many things in life it's all due to miscommunication ... I am sure this is much different if you go with somebody who lives there !! Anyway, in the afternoon we stayed fishing and trekking in the jungle and it was much more fun !!
this morning we took a boat on our way down to Kutching. Today we are at Kapit, a small pretty village and off tomorrow to Sibu and then finally to Kutching. More from there !!

hola desde Sarawak !!

despues de un viaje bastante largo para la distancia que es, cruzamos Brunei y las ciudades de Miri y Bintulu para llegar a Belaga, una pequenya ciudad perdida en medio de la selva (con casi ningun turista y a la que solo se puede llegar con 4x4, barca o avioneta). La gente aqui no es tan amable como en Sabah, ni la naturaleza es tan espectacular, pero tambien hay cosas bonitas. Ayer visitamos una 'Longhouse', que es como una gran casa de madera superlarga, con muchas casas dentro donde vive gente en la selva de Sarawak. Puede llegar a albergar hasta 100 familias, y todas tienen como un jefe. Fuimos ayer a visitar dos, pero como siempre en la vida los problemas de comunicacion nos impedieron disfrutar al maximo porque no fuimos demasiado bien recibidos !! No nos echaron ni nada, pero creo que nadie les aviso de que veniamos y no les gusta recibir visitas inesperadas de genta blanca !! Bueno, le compre un collar a una senyora y luego nos fuimos a pescar y hacer trekking en la jungla, eso estuvo ya mucho mejor !!
Ahora estoy en Kapit, de camino a Kutching por el rio. Manyana prontito dos barcos mas llenos de gente local, primero a Sibu y luego a Kutching. Mas desde alli !!
